On this day in 1979, the AC/DC single “Highway to Hell” debuted on the US Billboard Hot 100 at #82 (October 13)
The Angus Young riff that intros the song has gone down as an absolute classic in Oz rock.
There were hundreds of riffs going down every day," recalled Malcolm Young. "But this one, we thought, 'That's good.' It just stuck out like a dog's balls!”
As far as the title went? As Angus explained:
“… all we'd done is describe what it's like to be on the road for four years, like we'd been. A lot of it was bus and car touring, with no real break.
You crawl off the bus at four o'clock in the morning, and some journalist's doing a story and he says, "What would you call an AC/DC tour?" Well, it was a highway to hell. It really was.
When you're sleeping with the singer's socks two inches from your nose, that's pretty close to hell!”
The highway that also allegedly inspired the title, Canning Highway, connects the Perth Kwinana freeway to its port Fremantle.
For such a great rock song, it charted fairly modestly…
The single went to #14 in Belgium, #17 in the Netherlands, #23 in France, #24 in Australia and Spain, #36 in Sweden, #47 in the US, and #56 in the UK.
Ranked #258 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the “500 Greatest Songs of All Time”, the song is also part of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's “500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll” list. #highwaytohell#bonscott#acdcfans #acdcrocks #acdc#acdcfamily ... See MoreSee Less
That Angus interview reminds me of another one, right about the same time (or earlier?). When asked about the song title/album title If You Want Blood, as I recall, some reporter asked Angus before a show "What kind of show are you going to give the kids tonight?" And he replied "Well, if they want blood, they've got it."
Funny how, before internet, you'd have to track down every interview with your favourite band through magazines or newspapers. AC/DC was my world in 1982 when I was 11 years old. "Highway to Hell" was probably the third or so riff I taught myself how to play at 14. If I go karaoke singing, I still sing it. AC/DC are timeless.👍🏼
Wow! This show of shows is almost upon us! It's going to be an evening of Heaven & Hell!🕊🔥 ... See MoreSee Less
